Be wise: Building a legal career on the rock of biblical truths

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Matthew 7:24 (NIV)

We spend great amounts of time investing in our legal careers. The many legal acronyms (e.g. GDLs, LPCs, BPTCs, CILEx diplomas, LLBs, BAs, LLMs, BCLs, BIALL qualifications, IBC qualifications etc) each tell a story of efforts that have been made to ensure that people are qualified for their role in law.
But have we got in place the Bible truths that will help us to be effective Christian lawyers?

When Jesus was tempted three times by Satan in the desert, he responded each of those three times by quoting scripture. Seeing how scripture relates to the challenges we face as lawyers is therefore essential.

And remember Jesus' parable of the two men – the one who built his house on the sand and the other who built his house on the rock? To be like the man who built his house on the rock, we need to hear Jesus' words and put them into practice.

On this weekend away, Dominic Hughes (who has practised as a Barrister for over 16 years) will share some of the Bible passages that have most helped him to do his job as a lawyer.

Speaker: Dominic Hughes

As a barrister specialising in intellectual property law, Dominic firmly believes that God loves justice. One of his worst and best days came in the same case. He explains: "I had a judgment at first instance that was really wrong. I felt terrible because it was a really unjust judgment. We took the case to the Court of Appeal and one of my favourite days ever in Court was seeing a Court of Appeal judge "get" that the judgment was flawed. Seeing someone in authority recognise injustice is a wonderful thing. It's a great comfort to know God – who sits above all authorities – cares deeply about justice."

The Gideons gave Dominic a Bible when he was still a schoolboy which first drew him to the delight of reading God's Word. He adds: "The Bible makes sense of life and of the world and of us in a way that nothing else does. I'm excited at the thought of coming to the conference and sharing some of the scriptures that have helped me do my job as a lawyer."
