2024 AGM and Leadership Conference National
Leadership for Lawyers
Called and Equipped to Serve
The legal profession is all about service, but that idea can be obscured by misguided ambition and lawyers' competitiveness, especially in pursuit of career advancement and aspiration to be a legal leader, law firm partner, head of chambers, judge.
The Lord Jesus Christ had a different mindset, and demonstrated the character of real leadership. None before or since have been his leadership equal, and yet He came not to be served but to serve and (marvellously) to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (ESV) Jesus led with kingdom values, unrivalled authority, truth and grace. And the result? Justice, right relationships, and lasting peace.
Who is this for? Lawyers (all ages, strands, and stages) drawn to the person of Christ who, by His leadership, turned the world upside-down.
What will I learn? What cross-shaped, Christ-like leadership looks like. How faith in Jesus makes a difference to leading in law - judicial, chambers, law firms, academic institutions. The essential duties of a lawyer who is a trustee in church or charity.
What can I expect from the day?
- Bible teaching from His HHJ Mark Cawson KC* on on 'Cross-Shaped Legal Leadership' and 'Servanthood in Legal Leadership'.
- Leadership insights from an expert panel:
- Growth groups for judges, barrister, solicitors, legal academics, and students.
- Training from leading charity lawyers on being a charity/church trustee (separate track for law students).
- Opportunities for networking over lunch and refreshment breaks.
- The LCF AGM (11:45am start)
Should I make a weekend of it? The Leadership Conference is a day conference, but why not make a weekend of it in Nottingham. If you're able to stay over:
- book your after hours' ticket for food, conversation, and more on Saturday evening;
- join the LCF staff and trustees on Sunday morning as they attend different churches in Nottingham;
- meet us for lunch at Yellow Wood Cafe from 12:30; and
- why not plan a visit to National Justice Museum?
*His Honour Judge (Mark) Cawson KC was called to the Bar in 1982 and took Silk in 2001. He practised as a barrister in Manchester and London and sat as a Deputy High Court Judge until his appointment as a Specialist Civil Circuit Judge sitting in the Business and Property Courts and Administrative Court in Manchester and London in November 2020.
Mark was a Trustee of the North West Partnership between 2003 and 2020, and a Council member of Church Society between 2013 and 2020. He is Deputy Chancellor of the Diocese of Hereford.
We are hosting a free but ticketed event for church leaders and trustees on Friday 22 November at Redeemer Church Nottingham where an expert panel of specialist lawyers will provide the answers they need to know, about running a charity, managing staff (employees, office holders, and volunteers), and complying with data protection law.
We'd be grateful if you would share this invite with church leaders and trustees you know who live or work around East Midlands and South Yorkshire.
