'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."'Romans 1:16-17 (NIV)
Can you imagine living in a place where the leadership think they can crush belief in Jesus Christ, and actively do so through the mistreatment and persecution of Christians? Many in the early church faced this and it continues to be a reality for many today. No country in the world exemplifies the need for long term Christian support and prayer more than North Korea.
Events like the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and the opening up of countries such as China, show us that no earthly power or law can supress the reality of the risen Lord Jesus Christ. And we believe that is true for all areas of the world where Christians are persecuted.
One North Korean brother prayed this to God: "Please provide me with your power and wisdom so that I can preach your love to the people of my country and help them to live according to your words…".
How can he pray this? Because Christians are resurrection people, who understand that when all seems lost the power of the gospel overcomes and brings salvation to everyone who believes. Let us share with those who suffer for their faith the hope of the gospel that we celebrate at Easter, and not forget them.
1) Are you living in the reality of the resurrection hope of Easter and taking every opportunity to share the gospel? Ask God to give you the power and wisdom to do so.
2) Pray for those who are suffering this week for their faith – wherever they are – and pray that they may know the joy of the Lord as their strength.
