Week beginning: 12th July, 2015

By Tom Cordrey | London

"To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up!"

Revelation 3:1-2a (NIV)

There are some passages in the Bible that can make uncomfortable reading. This passage, though about a church, may also apply to us as individuals. To the outsider we may look like a thriving committed Christian, but a closer examination of our busy lives as lawyers may reveal that the reality is different. Would the evidence show that our quiet times have slipped, Sunday has stopped being set aside for God and our Bible remains on a shelf between outings to a midweek church group?

The passage contains a warning, "But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you" (verse 3b). The passage also offers help, "Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent" (verse 3a). And finally, the passage contains a promise "The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels" (verse 5).

Whatever happens this week, let's take seriously the charge to "Wake up!"

Prayer points:

1. Ask God to reveal where you have let your walk with Him drift. Repent and by the Holy Spirit endeavour to make the necessary change.
2. Give thanks for the opportunity to read God's word and meet with others in fellowship freely. Pray for those who are unable to do so but still hold fast to the Lord Jesus Christ.
