"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
"The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen."Genesis 1:1, Revelation 22:21 (NIV 1984)
The Bible tells a big story, from God's initiative in creation to the completion of His work of redemption. Yet even that is not the whole of God's story – He existed from eternity before His creation of the heavens and the earth and will continue eternally after they are superseded by a new heaven and a new earth.
We tend to have a view only of our own lifespan. Research suggests that more than half of the UK adult population have not made a Will. Drafting a 999 year lease can seem unreal. Who cares what the ground rent or the landlord's registration fee will be hundreds of years from now?
What makes the difference for us as Christians is in the final words of the story. If we are God's people, the grace of the Lord Jesus is with us. The pivotal event of the Big Story is God's intervention in world history through the birth, life, death and resurrection of His Son, offering the undeserved gift of eternal life to all who put their trust in Him. If we have received that gift, we will care about the future, and what we do now will matter in the age to come. Are we all living and working with that eternal perspective in view?
1. That we will rest securely in God's grace and not be striving to win His approval through what we do or how well we do it.
2. That we will remember the eternal significance of the lives we lead and the work we do by His power now at work in us.
3. That our changed lives will draw others towards Christ and the gift of eternal life He offers.
