The Great Commission

Week beginning: 5th March, 2017 | By | Ballymena, Northern Ireland

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Matthew 5 vv 14-16 (NIV)

As the Attorney General for Northern Ireland reminded all who attended the recent Northern Ireland regional launch of Speak Up (which he described as a hugely timely publication), unlike other inward looking religions "A Christian must preach the gospel. A Christian cannot keep Christianity to themselves. A Christian who does not spread the good news acts inconsistently with his or her Christian faith".

He went on to say "There is no one way to spread the good news. Good preaching is often done outside the pulpit and the best preaching is sometimes wordless." In other words as Jesus himself put it in the passage above from Matthew's gospel: "You are the light of the world … let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven". We need to be telling people about Jesus Christ, and living lives that reflect that too.

Our lives, both our words and actions, are a constant sermon to those around us even if we think no one is listening or indeed watching. Let us hope and indeed pray that they are always a proclamation of the gospel and that we are not failing in our great commission to make disciples of all because we are not letting our light shine.

Prayer points:

1. Ask for wisdom this week to know when and how to speak up about your faith in Christ.

2. Give thanks for our partners in East Africa, and pray for the LCF members who are currently working alongside them in Kenya, Ricky Kimachia, Ian and Merle Halliday.
