Need a trim?

Week beginning: 2nd April, 2017 | By John Head | Brighton

"{God} cuts away every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit.

John 15 v2 (CEV)

The gardeners among us will know the importance of pruning – cutting off the dead branches and cutting back others.

Cutting off the dead branches is a salutary reminder that if we decide to go it alone we lose our intimate relationship with God and "wither and die". We are disconnected from God.

Cutting back is a reminder that in order to retain or restore our fruitfulness in serving God we may need to feel his pruning shears. In pruning us God might remove opportunities and cut down cherished projects. These may have been hindering our effectiveness in God's service even though we might not have realised this.

We need to trust that God knows what he is doing and stick with him.

Then when the fruit of the Spirit comes – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – it will bring a new lease of life to enrich our walk with God.

Are you ready for pruning?

Prayer points:

1. Ask the Lord for the strength to trust completely in Him as He works to make us more like Christ.

2. Pray for those who you know are struggling with difficult situations, that they may know the peace of God that passes all understanding.
