Do I or my work matter this week?
Week beginning: 28th May, 2017 | By Gavin Callaghan | Perth
"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?"Psalm 8:3-4 (ESV)
A Monday (or Tuesday!) morning is a time we might consider some big questions: "What am I doing here?", or "Does my work matter?", or even "Do I matter?" Perhaps you are (professionally) riding the crest of a wave, or perhaps you are concerned that you career has stalled, or worse, is in decline.
Life does not make sense if you simply try and understand it in relation to your career, your possessions, or even your family or friends. Life only makes sense when understood in relation to God.
Having created man to know Him, God is interested in man. On a specific level, He's interested in people. Just think: Jesus was interested in a fraudster called Zaccheus, in two sisters who had lost their brother, and a man whose had lost his daughter. He was even interested in the hunger of thousands of people on a hillside who had come to hear him.
Note that David uses the word "mindful" to underline that fact. God isn't just aware of or vaguely interested in man. He cares for us.
Dear friend, He cares for you.
That's bigger than whatever else might be going on. And it means that you matter, and so (for that matter) does your work.
Now be encouraged, give thanks to God in prayer and get back to work!
1. Give thanks to God, the Creator of the universe, for his love and care for you.
2. Pray for good fruit from two Speak Up events on Wednesday at Moorlands College and Lansdowne Church.
