What are you totally devoted to?

Week beginning: 2nd July, 2017 | By Mhairi Hamilton | Ashford

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."

Colossians 4:2 (NIV)

How is your prayer life? Your quiet times may be an easy everyday occurrence; however it is remarkable how quickly time spent alone reading God's Word and in prayer can be squeezed by the pressing task list and immediacy of competing demands in the legal profession. Yet it is core to our walk with Jesus.

Paul encourages the Colossians to adopt three attitudes towards prayer:

1.  "devotion"; also translated as "continue steadfastly" in ESV. Devotion speaks of love and care, a commitment to continue over time to invest and persevere. Are we devoted to prayer, driven by a desire to know and understand God more?

2  "watchfulness". While it can be tempting to bring a wish-list to God for fixing, Paul encourages an intentional listening ear, to see where and how God is at work, and how we engage; and

3.  "thankfulness". Even when life's challenges seem overwhelming, we need to lift our eyes to God Himself, who gives us so many reasons to be thankful.

May I encourage you today to pause for a few moments, to focus on God, with a thankful heart and a desire to know Him even more deeply.

Prayer points:

1.  Give praise to God for who he is and thanks for his faithfulness. Be specific in your thanks.

2.  For the Summer Justice Team as they spend time this week with Lawyers of Hope in Rwanda.
