Abound in love!
Week beginning: 13th May, 2018 | By Ed Veale | London
"This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God."Philippians 1:9-11 (NIV)
Lawyers like to be known for having 'knowledge and depth of insight' – about relevant case law, litigation strategy, or professional conduct issues. To be regarded, by our colleagues and clients, as someone who has 'depth of insight' is a worthy aim indeed.
But here, for Paul, knowledge-with-insight, in itself, isn't the goal he has in mind. Rather they're the tramlines, the perimeter, which give shape to his big goal: a Love which Abounds. He longs for Christians to be marked by an ever-growing love for the Lord and his ways, for His people, and for His world. As the great Day approaches – not the Harry-Meghan wedding or our Salary Review day, but the Day of Christ – what an incentive that is to pursue the most excellent way of love.
So as a new financial year gets underway, where there will be expectations to be abounding in fees or clients or legal excellence, let's be those who are known, too, and above all, for abounding in love. We're called not to a wishy-washy, inoffensive niceness but an insightful, constructive, Spirit-borne love which engages with real people — to the glory and praise of God.
1. Praise God that through Jesus Christ, we have experienced God's abounding love and grace, that we might become pure and blameless in His sight.
2. Pray that our love may abound more and more to engage more effectively with those around us.
3. Pray for opportunities, such as the Michael Ramsden event, to share the good news of Jesus Christ with our colleagues.
