Week beginning: 6th July, 2014

By Sir Jeremy Cooke | London

"I lift my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth…… he will watch over your life."

Psalm 121:1-2, 7 (NIV)

"Someone to watch over me" was an old crooner's song of yesteryear. It expressed a longing for someone to care and protect the singer. The Jewish pilgrims' song on their way up to Jerusalem expressed their anxiety; whether they looked anxiously to the hills in case of attack or wondered if help might come from thence. Would any help be forthcoming? The confident answer was that help would come from the LORD, the creator of the universe, who, as the Psalm goes on to say, is never off duty.

5 times the Psalm repeats the thought that the LORD watches over his people. He who watches over you will not slumber, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep….. The LORD watches over you…. He will watch over your life….. The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore.

The Psalm speaks for itself. With an ever wakeful God on watch, why are we troubled, fearful, pressured or anxious? He watches over His people collectively and individually at all times. This week, next week, always and for ever - He will watch over your life.

Prayer points:

1) Give thanks that Jesus is our Shepherd, who watches over and cares for us.

2) Offer to God those things that trouble you and ask for the peace that comes only from trusting fully Him.
