"March on, my soul; be strong!"Judges 5:21 (NIV)
A Christian Lawyer's Practical Motto
Preparation for May's European Cross Current IFES young lawyer and law student programme unearthed the question, "what would speak into their daily challenges of bribery; corruption; Islamic fundamentalism or that evangelical Christians represent only 1% (or less) of people in their countries?".
We too know about daily challenges, like our European partners, and live in times of uncertainty and discouragement, but how do we all progress?
Deborah provides inspiration. Renowned prophetess, honoured judge and (ideal) role model called to lead others, she made it clear who reigned as commander in chief: "The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you" (Judges 4:6). Unlike Jezebel, who sought no-one's counsel, level-headed Deborah obeyed the Lord and insisted his will—not hers—be done. As Christian lawyers, are we seeking God's counsel as we proceed?
Deborah's greatest gift was inspiring people to accomplish more than imaginably possible. Israel had been under enemy occupation, their national infrastructures were crumbling and morale was so low no-one had the will to fight. Enter Deborah who raised an army, defeated the enemy, and brought peace for forty years. "March on, my soul; be strong!"
Regardless of what frustrating, discouraging, uncertain factor lies ahead of us this week, we can learn from Deborah. Like her, we can seek God's counsel and, through this, lead and inspire others to turn to Christ and help them grow in faith.
1. Give thanks that God has placed us purposefully, to do His work.
2. That despite frustrating, discouraging and uncertain factors, we can lean on Him and boldly share His love with others today and this week.
3. For members of the new Cross Current group, may the material they cover in this programme help them to grow in their faith and may they take heed and share this with others in their home countries.
