"We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 (NIV, 1984)

Passionate concern

Acts 17 tells us that Paul and Silas' preaching in Thessalonica led to the conversion of some Jews and Greeks but also such vehement opposition from others that they had to be smuggled out by night.

Subsequently Paul had been desperate to find out how the new Thessalonian converts had been doing and so he sent Timothy. Had their fledgling faith been stamped out by persecution? How were they doing? Paul was passionately concerned.

The report came back in glowing terms. Timothy found remarkable faith, hope and love. A faith which meant the Thessalonians had stuck to the gospel in spite of terrible pressure and they lived to please God, a love for one another which had struck Timothy forcibly and a tremendous hope in salvation through Jesus.

What would a Timothy find if he visited you in your workplace? With his focus on Jesus' return Paul encouraged the Thessalonians and prayed that their faith, love and hope would increase. It would be good to be doing that for one another in the LCF.

1. For your fellow members of the LCF, that they would know an increase this week in their faith, hope and love in Christ.
2. For the debate in Parliament this week on the Marris sponsored Assisted Suicide Bill and that MPs will stand for life and the protection of the vulnerable.
