When you suffer false accusations what do you do?

Week beginning: 17th September, 2017 | By Jeremy Cooke | London

"O LORD my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me…
O LORD my God, if I have done this and there is guilt on my hands– if I have done evil to him who is at peace with me … then let my enemy pursue and overtake me … and make me sleep in the dust…
O righteous God, who searches minds and hearts, bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure…
My shield is God Most High, who saves the upright in heart. God is a righteous Judge..."

Psalm 7:1-11 (NIV 1984)

Have you ever been bad-mouthed? Criticised unfairly, accused unjustly or been the subject of malicious falsehood? David here had apparently been wrongly accused of treachery to Saul. What does he do?

He takes refuge in God. He reminds himself that God is righteous and searches minds and hearts and cannot be deceived. He knows all the ins and outs and so David examines himself to see if there is any guilt. And he prays. That must be the starting point as even unfair attacks/criticism often have an element of truth. We need to repent of all that is wrong, whether there is some justice in the accusation or merely wounded pride because of what others may think of us, when what matters is what the Lord thinks.

Perceiving the injustice to Him leads him to pray for God to deal with wrongdoing and to preserve the righteous. When we feel the world is treating us badly, is our reaction to pray for our suffering fellow Christians? Will we look beyond ourselves to see the wider world and purposes of God?

Because God is a righteous Judge, our shield is God Most High. David knows that He will save the upright in heart in due course. If not now, then at the end of the age. Maranatha. May your kingdom come.

Prayer points:

1.  Examine yourself and take the opportunity to repent for those areas in your life where you know you need God's forgiveness.

2.  Pray for your fellow brothers and sisters who are suffering persecutions and false accusation for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
