Happy talk...

Week beginning: 1st July, 2018 | By Mark Barrell | Maputo, Mozambique

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.

Psalm 19:1-3 (ESV)

I know, I am fortunate. A happy joy of living in Mozambique is that most days, when I open the curtains, the sun is out, the sky is blue, with hardly a cloud to spoil the view! As July starts I suspect you too will be hopeful of such mornings, or to enjoy some in the coming holiday season.

Psalm 19 reminds us that the sun, alongside all creation, joyfully declares, proclaims and pours forth speech and knowledge about the glory of our creator. As lawyers we love both speech and knowledge – using them all day long in the pursuit of justice. King David prompts us to remember that all we say and know needs to be put into perspective.

Our words are nothing compared to the one whose word and law is perfect and pure, true and sure, that revives, delights and endures forever. Sadly the world may reject the Word of God and so injustice is inevitable. But rather than discourage us, may that drive our minds to ponder anew the Word of God that is firm and let our hearts rejoice in "the Word" who saves us.

Whatever the weather be joyful and say, like David, verse 14, the perfect Christian lawyer's prayer:

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer."

Prayer Points:

1. If you have time, read Psalm 19 now.

2. Pray verse 14.

3. Ask God to give you a renewed sense of his joy in his Word.
