Getting our priorities right

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.Matthew 6:24 (ESV)
For too many of us the legal profession has become a pressured commercial environment where the drive to achieve financial and other targets is in danger of becoming a greater priority than achieving justice for our clients. It is all too easy to be driven by the fees that one is getting for a case rather than the privilege of being able to help a client to achieve the right and fair result.
Jesus spoke about the risks of developing a love of money on several occasions. In this passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns us of the serious dangers if we develop an unhealthy subservience to money because we cannot serve both God and money. It is important therefore to keep this warning at the forefront of our minds at all times and to strive to get our priorities right, at work and throughout our lives, and to place our love of our glorious sovereign God above all else, and not to allow our lives to be driven by a love of money.
1. Pray that we will not allow a love of money to prevail in our work or to otherwise prevail in our lives.
2. Pray that in all that we do, working as lawyers and more widely in our lives, we might get our priorities right and allow our love for our glorious and sovereign God to prevail above all else, so that we might best strive to achieve justice.
