A lion stalking the office
Week beginning: 4th August, 2019 | By Owen Hallam | Sevenoaks
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.1 Peter 5:8-10 (ESV)
On a Monday morning, we often do not know what the week will bring. We may be anxious about tight deadlines, difficult clients or long hours. But Peter warns us that there is a much greater danger lurking as we go about our week. Our offices and libraries are actually a savannah: the devil stalks the corridors and conference rooms like a lion, looking for someone to devour. Peter tells us to be alert to the spiritual dangers which threaten us day-to-day.
When facing a lion, the natural reaction might be to run as fast as we can in the opposite direction, but this isn't what Peter tells us to do when we face the devil. Rather than fleeing, we are to stand firm, immovable in our faith, shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Because we do not suffer alone – Christians around the world face the same adversary as we do. Thankfully, we do not do this by our own power. It is God himself who restores us when we are weak and strengthens our faith.
The week ahead may be daunting if we rely on our own strength, but with God to strengthen us and fellow Christians surrounding us, we are equipped to stand firm when we face the spiritual battles that the week may bring.
1. Pray that God will strengthen you in your faith this week as you face spiritual dangers.
2. Pray that Christians around the world facing persecution will stand firm in their faith.
