Week beginning: 1st September, 2013

"The Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.'"Luke 10 v 41-42 (CSV)
When Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha and Martha complained to him that she was being left to do all the work while Mary sat at Jesus's feet, Jesus appeared not to be too sympathetic. As so often happens when we read of incidents in Scripture we don't know much about the context. For example did Mary intend to help her sister later or did she wish that Martha would do likewise and sit at the feet of Jesus? What we do know is that Jesus wanted Mary to hear what he had to say.
Opportunities to listen to Jesus through his word are frequently missed in a busy professional life. Let us remind ourselves constantly of the "one thing" that is necessary. Every day of our lives God's message through Jesus can be brought home to us by regular and frequent reading of the actual words of Jesus in a simple and straightforward way, wherever we are, with whoever we may be and whatever the circumstances in professional life, in family life, in church, at leisure. God's word is both wonderful and challenging.
Let us listen to Jesus. Note too the final words of verse 42: what he has to say will not be taken away from us.
- Pray that you will be disciplined in making time to hear from Jesus each day.
- Pray for LCF SYL Director, Matthew, leading a seminar at UCCF Forum this week.
